An education in the marist tradition

Relay for Life 2021

20th August 2021

By Lucas Mc Evoy, Service Captain

Six teams across all year levels participated in the annual Relay for Life on 7 August. Our students spent nine hours walking around Barlow Park to raise awareness about cancer and to show that cancer never rests so neither does the relay. Each team remained on the track at all times.

All our members pledged to raise $200 each;and held various fundraisers at school and in the community. These consisted of bake sales; Zooper Dooper sales; Bunnings, community and college sausage sizzles; raffles and selling 60 boxes of chocolates.

We raised $15,752, the highest youth fundraising total in Far North Queensland, and a personal record for our college and we walked a total of 1016.2 kilometres.

On the day we were involved in all aspects of the event: the talent show, the candlelight ceremony and the tug o' war, where a Year 12 team took out first place.

Year 7 student Graham O'Donoghue was presented with the Spirit of the Relay Award, for his happy enthusiastic presence at the event; while also showing true Marist Characteristics.

All this couldn’t have been possible without the teachers who volunteered on the day to come and support our Saints men So a shout out to them all.
