St Augustine's College

An education in the marist tradition

Years 9 & 10

Student experiences in Years 9 and 10 at Saints are underpinned by the National Curriculum and the St Augustine’s learning framework.

This framework challenges our boys to reach their potential, to serve the wider community and to understand that education empowers individuals and is an instigator of change. It’s a time of consolidation and growth - building on the groundwork from previous years and preparing for greater independence and decision-making ahead.

The curriculum is structured around the following core subjects that must be studied:

RELIGIOUS
EDUCATION

SCIENCE

ENGLISH

HUMANITIES &
SOCIAL SCIENCE

MATHEMATICS

PHYSICAL
EDUCATION

YEAR 9 ELECTIVES

Year 9 electives run for one semester and are chosen from each of the following groups of elective subjects:

  • The arts – either drama, music, or visual art
  • Technology – either design, digital, or food
  • LOTE/ Business – either Italian, Japanese or business

During this time parents and their sons are involved in a comprehensive process as students make decisions about their educational directions and career options:

They decide whether to:

  1. Study to prepare for tertiary entrance
  2. Study to prepare for work after Year 12
  3. Leave school and seek employment

Year 10 is a preparatory time for students to ensure that they are developing the skills that will be required of them in senior schooling. For students wishing to pursue university entrance, it is important that they are ready to undertake the necessary academic prerequisites in order to enter their chosen course of study.  It is important for students to consider various pathways when choosing electives for Year 10.  At Saints, Year 10 electives are designed as full-year courses of study.
