Marist Education in North Queensland

Girls Boarding

Chavoin Residence

St Augustine's College accepts students of St Monica’s College as boarders on both a weekly and full-time basis.  The girls boarding programme is a popular and distinctive feature of the College’s life.

Girls attend St Monica's for all their normal school education, while their boarding programme is the responsibility of the St Augustine's. There is a separate Girls' Residence, Chavoin Residence, under the supervision of live-in female staff. The girls and boys join together for meals and organised recreation and other activities. The girls and boys follow a similar evening and weekend schedule. The girls have access to the extensive St Augustine's facilities, e.g. library and I.T. facilities, music centre, swimming pool.

To be eligible to be enrolled as a boarding student at St Augustine's, girls need to meet the enrolment criteria for both St Monica's and St Augustine's and be accepted by each Principal as a boarder.

The program has been developed as a response to families in both College.  They have told us they are interested in:

  • the attraction and convenience of having their sons and daughters in the same location for boarding;
  • the benefits of education in a city school: wide curriculum choice; well-developed co-curricular offerings; extra facilities;
    the broadening of horizons and opening of opportunities that a smaller country town cannot provide; and, at the same time
  • single-gender education for in-school time.

Obviously, St Monica's and St Augustine's are uniquely placed to be able to meet these three hopes.

Some further information

The Marist Brothers operate six boarding schools across Australia. Four of these now have both boy and girl boarding students:

Assumption College, Kilmore (Vic), Sacred Heart College, Adelaide (S.A.) and Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes (NSW) are all leading schools in their regions, with highly regarded boarding programmes. The programme for St Augustine's and St Monica's has been developed on the experience and success of the boy and girl boarding arrangements that operate in these three schools.
